What is System Data on a Mac
It is the only category on the storage bar that nothing measured. Everything else is counted, and System Data is whatever is left over once the counting stops.
System Data is not a folder. It is what is left over once macOS has measured every other category. Even that leftover is an estimate rather than an exact figure. Nothing put anything there, which is why nothing can open it and why the number moves on its own.
That single fact explains most of what people find maddening about it. You cannot click into a residual. An approximate remainder can differ between two readings minutes apart without a byte having moved. For a figure you can rely on, Disk Utility reports free space for the volume's container directly.
Why System Data used to be called Other Storage
If you have read older advice about this, it talked about Other Storage rather than System Data. Same category, different label. Apple renamed it around macOS Monterey and changed nothing underneath. The name has held through Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia and Tahoe since.
The old name was the more honest of the two. Other says what the category is, which is everything that did not fit anywhere else. System Data implies that macOS put it there deliberately, which sends people looking for a system folder that does not exist.
What actually falls into System Data on a Mac
Nothing is filed here. Things land here by failing to match anywhere else. The same file can land in a different category tomorrow if macOS classifies it differently.

Note what is missing from that list. macOS itself is not in System Data. The operating system has its own category, labelled macOS on current versions. System Data sits beside it holding what no category claimed.
Why you cannot click into System Data
On the Storage pane in System Settings, nearly every category carries a More Info button leading somewhere. This one does not. It is the category people most want to open.
The reason is that the contents have no single home. They are spread across three places. The system wide Library. The one inside your home folder. And a temporary area under private var that most people never see. Nothing ties them together except that the storage pane could not file them anywhere else.
That is not an oversight nobody got round to. A button needs somewhere to point. There is nowhere. The contents are scattered across the system library and your own, under dozens of directories that have nothing in common except failing to match a category.
So the only routes in are indirect. Disk Utility reports snapshots and reclaimable space as their own figures rather than folding them into a category. A mapping tool such as DaisyDisk renders what is left as a chart of blocks, which at least shows you where to investigate. Reading the storage bar properly tells you whether any of that is worth your evening.
How much System Data is normal on a Mac
Published figures range from about 12GB to over 100GB. Apple gives no guidance at all, so every number you find is somebody's observation rather than a specification. The useful answer is a scale.

The scale only means anything next to the size of your disk. Read the figure as a share of the whole rather than a number of gigabytes and most of the anxiety goes out of it. A small slice is unremarkable at any size. A third of everything you own is a different conversation.
What makes System Data grow fastest
Three things account for most large figures and none of them is mysterious.
- Device backups. Every iPhone or iPad backed up to the Mac leaves gigabytes behind. A new backup does not clear the old one.
- Update and installer leftovers. Collected late or not at all. An interrupted update leaves more behind than a clean one.
- Caches from a handful of applications. Not all applications, a handful. Browsers and creative tools can each hold tens of gigabytes on their own.
The pattern is worth noticing. Each of these grows in steps rather than smoothly, which is why System Data tends to jump after a particular week rather than creep.
Apple Intelligence is on that list less than the guides suggest. On current macOS the storage pane surfaces the on-device model files under the macOS category rather than here. Plenty of advice attributes a rising System Data figure to it anyway, so check what your own Mac reports before accepting the explanation.
When System Data is genuinely misbehaving
Most large figures are normal accumulation. Some are not. It is worth saying so rather than insisting the fault is always yours.
Reports of System Data reaching several hundred gigabytes appear regularly on current macOS, including one recent thread at 700GB where none of the usual remedies moved it. Others describe steady growth of several gigabytes a month with no matching activity or figures that climb after emptying the Trash rather than falling.
One user with 160GB of it on a 245GB Mac mini went as far as calling Apple Support and screen sharing with an agent. The only suggestion offered was a factory reset. Worth knowing before you spend a weekend on it, since it marks roughly where the supported answers stop.

What to do about a large System Data figure
Very little, most of the time. That is an unsatisfying answer and it is the correct one.
System Data is the storage bar showing its working. It exists because macOS would rather admit to a remainder than pretend the categories add up. On a Mac with room to spare, a large remainder is a report about arithmetic rather than a problem.
When space genuinely is short, work from the things inside it that you can actually find. Device backups and snapshots are visible and sizeable and they account for most of it. Chasing the category itself is chasing a number that was never anywhere.
Common questions
Is System Data safe to delete?
The question does not quite work, because there is nothing to select. It is an arithmetic result rather than a location. What you can do is reduce the things inside it, which is a different job and a slower one.
Why does System Data change size on its own?
Because every other category is moving underneath it. If macOS reclassifies something or a measurement finishes, the residue changes without anything on your disk having been added or removed.
What was Other Storage?
The same category under an older name. Apple renamed it around macOS Monterey. The change was cosmetic. Older guides referring to Other are describing what your Mac now labels System Data.
My System Data is 60GB. Should I act on that?
On a Mac with room to spare, no. On one that is nearly full, it is worth an hour. The number on its own says very little, which is why the useful question is whether it keeps climbing.
Why did System Data grow after I deleted things?
It happens. It is reported enough to be worth expecting. Space in transit belongs to no category, so during the gap between removing something and the disk letting go of it, the remainder is where it shows up. Give it a day. If the figure is still climbing, that is the behaviour worth chasing.
Will reinstalling macOS clear it?
A reinstall over the top rarely moves it much, since your Library comes through untouched. An erase and restore does clear it. Then rebuilds most of it within weeks, because the things that made it are the things you use.
